Website care

A backup needs a way back.

Ask what is captured, where it is kept and how a restore would be carried out.

01

Name the material to recover

A website may depend on uploaded files, a database, application configuration and external services. Ask which of these are included in the backup arrangement. “Daily backups” does not explain the complete scope.

02

Discuss recovery before the incident

Find out who requests a restore, who authorises it and what information they need. Ask about retention, access and any charges in the current service terms. Keep this information somewhere reachable if the site itself is unavailable.

03

Use a controlled restore check

Agree a safe test with the person responsible for the system. Restoring into an isolated environment can help establish whether the saved material is usable without overwriting production. Record what was tested and what remained outside the exercise.
