Hosting basics

Know what a DNS change is meant to do.

Prepare a record-level change with the right account, a saved starting point and a way to check the result.

01

Locate the authoritative provider

Find the service managing the domain’s DNS, which may differ from the registrar or host. Obtain the required record details from the destination provider. Keep the record type, name and value together; do not infer them from a screenshot of another domain.

02

Save the starting point

Export or record the existing configuration before an authorised change. Identify website and mail records separately. Replacing everything to fix one address can affect services that were working correctly.

03

Make and verify the intended change

Use your provider’s documentation for the exact operation. Cloudflare’s guide explains creating, editing and deleting records within its dashboard. Verify both the intended website result and any related services. Keep the previous values and the time of the change available if you need to investigate.
