HOSTRAT / THE WEBSITE FIELD GUIDE

Website planning

A useful website starts with a clear job.

Plan a custom website around the people using it, the information they need and the next action they should take.

01

Write the job in one sentence

Before choosing a layout, finish this sentence: “This website helps this person do this thing.” A service business might help a visitor decide whether to request an estimate. A publication might help a reader find an answer. Pick the primary task before listing features.

02

Turn questions into pages

Make a list of the questions someone asks before taking that action. Give each important question an obvious home. A short service description, examples of the process and a clear contact route can be more useful than a large menu of unexplained offerings.

03

Define the handover

Agree who supplies the copy, approves changes and owns the domain, hosting account and source files. Ask how an ordinary content update works after launch. Put those responsibilities into the brief so maintenance is part of the project from the beginning.
