HOSTRAT / THE WEBSITE FIELD GUIDE

Hosting basics

Keep the name and the account together.

A practical record of who controls a domain and where its settings live.

01

Identify the registrar

Record the company holding the registration, the account owner and the renewal contact. Keep recovery information in a secure place outside the website itself. A domain name, a DNS provider and a web host can belong to separate accounts.

02

Keep the purpose of each setting clear

The domain is the readable name people use. DNS records connect names to services. Write down what a record is for before changing it, especially when the same domain serves a website and email.

03

Review the handover

If someone registers the name for a project, agree who should own and manage it afterward. Test your access through the provider’s official channel. Do not put passwords or transfer codes into a general project brief.
